Zohran Mamdani, reportedly sent a handwritten note to Khalid expressing solidarity and emotional support during his incarceration. The letter, which addressed Khalid by his first name and referenced reflections on resilience and bitterness, was shared publicly by Khalid’s family, immediately drawing intense attention in India and abroad.

Mamdani, the first Muslim(Radical) and Indian-origin mayor of New York City, reportedly conveyed that he had met Khalid’s parents during their visit to the United States and assured them that their son was “being thought of.” While supporters framed the gesture as an expression of personal empathy and human rights concern, critics viewed it as a provocative intervention in India’s internal judicial process.

Strong Political Reaction in India

The letter sparked swift backlash from India’s ruling political establishment. Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the mayor’s move, questioning his authority to comment on an ongoing legal matter in a sovereign nation. Party spokespersons accused Mamdani of endorsing an individual charged under serious laws and warned against foreign interference in India’s democratic and judicial institutions.

Several nationalist organizations also criticized the mayor, calling the act inappropriate and inflammatory. They argued that Khalid is an accused in a case involving communal violence and that public expressions of support from foreign political figures risk politicizing a sensitive legal process.

Broader International Context

The controversy unfolded amid increasing global scrutiny over extended pre-trial detentions and civil liberties in India. Around the same time, a group of U.S. lawmakers urged Indian authorities to ensure a fair and timely judicial process in Khalid’s case, citing international legal norms and due process standards.

However, Indian officials have consistently maintained that the matter lies strictly within the jurisdiction of the country’s courts and that legal proceedings are being conducted according to established law.

Israel Pushes Back at Mayor Mamdani

Adding another international dimension, Israel strongly criticized Mayor Mamdani on the very day the Khalid letter gained attention. Israeli officials accused him of enabling antisemitism following his decision to roll back city-level adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism and ease restrictions related to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Israel expressed concern that such policy shifts could weaken safeguards against hate speech and jeopardize the safety of Jewish communities. Mamdani, however, defended his approach, stating that his administration remains firmly opposed to all forms of hatred and discrimination while upholding civil liberties and free expression.
